Leveraging cutting-edge technology to solve ecological challenges.
What I Offer
I help researchers, conservation organizations, and technology companies build and deploy sensor systems that work in the real world, from the Arctic Circle to Patagonia, from livestock pastures to low-Earth orbit. My work spans the full stack: custom PCB design, embedded firmware, wireless networking, cloud infrastructure, and data analysis. If your project involves putting sensors in a difficult environment and getting useful data out, I can help.
Problems I Solve
- Need to track animals in remote terrain? I designed and deployed CollarID, a multi-modal GPS collar with LoRaWAN, satellite, and peer-to-peer telemetry, plus a real-time cloud dashboard for live tracking, geofencing, and data export. Tested on goats, cattle, hyenas, and dogs across three continents.
- Want to monitor wildlife acoustically at scale? I built BuzzCam, a distributed microphone network deployed in Patagonia to measure native vs. invasive bee populations, and SoundSHROOM, multi-channel acoustic stations deployed in the Arctic for bird research.
- Building a wearable sensor platform? I led AirSpecs from concept through international manufacturing in Shenzhen to a 30-participant deployment across Boston, Fribourg, and Singapore, with companion iOS and watchOS apps.
- Need hardware that survives extreme conditions? CollarID enclosures are FEA-validated against lion and hyena bite forces. I've also developed and sent ruggedized hardware into orbit.
- Have sensor data but need insights? I apply ML and signal processing to extract behavioral patterns from acoustic, IMU, and GPS data, including species-level classification from audio and activity state detection from accelerometer signals.
How I Work
I take projects from ideation through field deployment. That typically means:
- Scoping the sensing requirements and environmental constraints
- Rapid prototyping: schematic capture, PCB layout, 3D-printed enclosures, firmware
- Building the data pipeline: wireless transport, cloud ingestion, storage, visualization
- Field deployment and iteration based on real-world performance
I've done this cycle dozens of times across projects with National Geographic, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and independent research collaborations.
